[Custom] Fitting Kyosho Optima Tires on Tamiya The Frog

Customize

I’m back with another suspension and wheel upgrade for Tamiya’s “The Frog.”

This time, I installed tires and wheels from the Kyosho Optima.

With added white lettering, this custom look gives the vintage buggy a fresh edge.

Selecting Tires and Wheels

Kyosho Optima Pin Tires (OTT243MC) and 5-Spoke Black Wheels (OTH244BKB).

I purchased two sets to equip both the front and rear axles.

The tires and wheels assembled. I applied custom white lettering to the sidewalls.

Applying white lettering to the sidewalls adds a realistic, scale-racing touch.

It creates a sharp contrast against the black wheels.

Solving Front Hub Interference

Initially, I used the stock DT-04 front wheel hubs, but they caused physical interference with the new wheels.

The stock hub interferes with the inner rim of the Optima wheel.

To resolve this, I swapped out the hardware using the following parts:

  • Eagle Model AL Front Hub for DT-04 (DT-04-01P2U)
  • Tamiya Clamp Type Aluminum Wheel Hub 9mm Thick (OP.1610)
  • 0.8mm Washer ×2
The newly installed front hub assembly, offering better rigidity.
With the new hubs, the wheels fit cleanly with zero interference.

The clamp-type hubs ensure secure mounting and eliminate wobbling.

Final Build: Kyosho-Shod The Frog

The pin pattern combined with the white lettering completely transforms the stance.

Conclusion

Fitting Kyosho Optima tires gives Tamiya’s The Frog a unique and aggressive look.

While hub modifications were necessary to clear the rims, the result is well worth the effort.
