I’m back with another suspension upgrade for Tamiya’s “The Frog.”
Previously, I used DT-04 arms for a front oil damper conversion (see past post).
This time, I’m trying a custom setup using Kyosho Ultima suspension arms.
Required Kyosho Parts
For this build, I gathered the following components:
- Kyosho Ultima Suspension Arm Set (UT004B)
- Kyosho Flange Shaft 3×26mm (OT248)
- Kyosho Shaft 3×43mm (UT013)
- Kyosho E-Ring (1-E025)

Installing Oil Dampers and Springs

An aluminum shock plate purchased on Amazon was used for mounting the dampers.
I paired them with the “TRF501X Setting Spring Set (OP.974).”

Fine-Tuning with Spacers

Since there are small gaps at the arm mounts, I used spacers to achieve a snug fit.

Ensuring smooth articulation while eliminating unwanted play is key to a good setup.
Final Assembly: Aggressive Front Stance

The front end now looks much more professional and ready for action.
The oil dampers will handle bumps significantly better than stock friction shocks.
Conclusion
Modifying Tamiya’s The Frog with Kyosho Ultima arms is a great custom project.
Cross-brand parts sharing requires spacer adjustments, but the handling benefits are huge.
If you want to upgrade your vintage buggy’s front end, give this a try!
