Following up on the previous build article, the Grasshopper is finally complete. This time, it’s the long-awaited first run (shakedown). My heart pounds as I hold a transmitter for the first time in about 40 years. As a kid, I used to race The Hornet and other buggies. However, this is my first time driving The Grasshopper. Here’s my review of its performance at a nearby park.
To the Park! A Meeting with an Iconic Machine
Just look at this magnificent machine.
Memories of my RC-obsessed childhood come flooding back. It has a simple yet captivating design. This is truly a legendary RC buggy.

The view from this angle is also fantastic.
Trying to contain my excitement, I gripped the transmitter’s throttle. I’m excited to drive The Grasshopper for the very first time.

A Wild Ride! First Run Impressions
It’s time for the maiden voyage. I slowly squeezed the throttle, and it took off with a light motor sound. However, its performance was more intense than I ever imagined.

Surprisingly Bouncy Tires
As its name suggests, The Grasshopper loves to hop. It cheerfully jumped over the slightest bumps in the park. I love this untamed feeling, which is likely due to its simple suspension structure.
Sliding Rear Tires are a Blast
The rear tires slide out when you pick up a bit of speed. On sandy surfaces, it was a series of spins. This is another part of the fun of driving it. The original tires don’t seem to offer high grip.
Future Customization Plans
After the first run, I’m even more excited about the future of this hobby. To aim for a ride that is more to my liking, I’m planning to replace the following three parts first.
| Customization Item | Details and Purpose |
| 1. Installing Oil Dampers | I want to reduce bouncing and improve stability. It seems parts from its sibling, The Hornet, can be used. |
| 2. Upgrading the Tires | I want to increase grip for a better feel of the terrain. The Hornet’s tires are a popular choice. |
| 3. Changing the Motor | Once I get more used to driving, I want to upgrade from the standard 380 to a 540 motor for even more powerful performance. |
Conclusion
I’m back in the world of RC cars after a 40-year hiatus, and The Grasshopper, my first ever, is the perfect partner. It’s the challenge of mastering it that makes RC cars so enjoyable. It was a fantastic time that reminded me of this simple truth. I’m looking forward to slowly customizing and enjoying this machine.
