I’ve taken the legendary Tamiya Grasshopper to the next level with a full suspension overhaul.
In this post, I’ll be documenting the installation of high-performance aluminum dampers.
This upgrade significantly improves both off-road performance and mechanical aesthetics.
The Component: Tamiya OP.1993 Aluminum Damper Set

This set features precision-machined cylinders for ultra-smooth suspension travel.

Front Suspension Assembly

I integrated lower arms from the Hornet evo for this setup.
The spring mounts previously used on the Grasshopper were also utilized to secure the shocks.

Rear Suspension Assembly

For the upper mount, I used Hornet’s D4 and D5 parts.
Spacers were added to fine-tune the mounting angle of the dampers.

I also utilized spacers for the lower shock mounts to ensure smooth operation.

Testing Ride Height and Tire Combinations
First, I tested the build with Blitzer Beetle tires.

Next, I swapped them for Kyosho Optima tires.

Experimental Tuning: Using Front Shocks on the Rear
In search of the perfect stance, I tried mounting the “Front Aluminum Dampers” on the rear.

This was paired with Tamiya CVA Mini Dampers on the front.

Conclusion
Upgrading to aluminum dampers has transformed the handling of the Grasshopper.
The ability to tune the stance through various parts is the heart of the RC hobby.
Happy building, and enjoy your unique customized machine!
