[Custom Log] Tamiya Grasshopper Aluminum Damper Upgrade & Ride Height Tuning

Customize

I’ve taken the legendary Tamiya Grasshopper to the next level with a full suspension overhaul.

In this post, I’ll be documenting the installation of high-performance aluminum dampers.

This upgrade significantly improves both off-road performance and mechanical aesthetics.

The Component: Tamiya OP.1993 Aluminum Damper Set

I used the official Tamiya Aluminum Damper Set for TT-02B/DF-03 (OP.1993).

This set features precision-machined cylinders for ultra-smooth suspension travel.

The comprehensive parts list allows for various tuning possibilities.

Front Suspension Assembly

The blue anodized finish adds a premium touch to the front end.

I integrated lower arms from the Hornet evo for this setup.

The spring mounts previously used on the Grasshopper were also utilized to secure the shocks.

Combining parts from different models ensured optimal stroke and fitment.

Rear Suspension Assembly

The rear view looks robust with the high-capacity aluminum shocks.

For the upper mount, I used Hornet’s D4 and D5 parts.

Spacers were added to fine-tune the mounting angle of the dampers.

Precise clearance was achieved through the clever use of spacers.

I also utilized spacers for the lower shock mounts to ensure smooth operation.

Mounting positions were adjusted to prevent any binding during travel.

Testing Ride Height and Tire Combinations

First, I tested the build with Blitzer Beetle tires.

The large tires give it a monster-buggy look, though the ride height feels quite high.
With the body on, it looks like a rugged off-roader.

Next, I swapped them for Kyosho Optima tires.

This setup creates a much more “racing buggy” silhouette.

Experimental Tuning: Using Front Shocks on the Rear

In search of the perfect stance, I tried mounting the “Front Aluminum Dampers” on the rear.

I intentionally chose shorter shocks for the rear to lower the CG.

This was paired with Tamiya CVA Mini Dampers on the front.

Personally, I prefer this lower ride height for a cleaner, more aggressive look.

Conclusion

Upgrading to aluminum dampers has transformed the handling of the Grasshopper.

The ability to tune the stance through various parts is the heart of the RC hobby.

Happy building, and enjoy your unique customized machine!
